FRX reports

I understand the designer in Reporting Services can import Access reports.
Today a customer asked me if it's possible to import reports on Great Plains
data written using FRX. Anybody know?
JimJames,
The FRX file is a Visual Fox file which is really a table. The format is
well documented but I am not aware of a direct conversion tool at this time.
I would suggest a repost on the Visual Fox newsgroup
microsoft.public.fox.vfp.reports.printing.

Frustrating Reporting Services problem. New machine fails to deploy reports to report serv

Hi All,
I got a new machine. On my old machine, I had no problem using VS
.Net to deploy Report Projects to our Report Server.
On my new machine, I installed IIS, installed VS .Net, enabled
ASP.Net, performed a Report Designer installation of Reporting
Services.
After I create my report in VS .Net and try to deploy it, I get the
following error message:
A connection could not be made to the report server
http://MyRServerName/ReportServer
I am a local admin of the machine that the report server is on and I
have no problem navigating to http://MyRServerName/ReportServer using
Internet Explorer.
I found the following USENET thread that describes my problem, but I'm
not sure the solution there is the same for me:

All help appreciated.
Thanks a lot,

front end tool against reporting services?

Hi,
I'm looking for a list of tools which can be used in front of reporting
services to create reports without using visual studio.
In my current list there is RSInteract and report builder.
SQL 2008 will also have a client report generator.
do you have any other tools for me?
ideally the application is web based and can be used in sharepoint
integrated mode.
Thanks.

Since RDL is a form of XML, technically you could build a custom
application in ASP.NET/etc that can create the .rdl file (XML) and
datasource file, etc for you based on some user input, etc. Hope this
helps.

front end options for entering data into an oracle database

Hi,

I need to set up a generic table in Oracle that allows users to enter
data that can later be retrieved in reports.

I was thinking of a 3 column table in this structure:

DATE,ITEM,VALUE

figuring that you can store anything in this way because ITEM can be
anything and you can have multiple instances of a particular value by
having a new date.

Does that seem reasonable?

In any case, what are my user front end options? I was thinking a
Microsoft Access database but its not ideal because not everyone here
has Access?

Can you do it with Excel? Or what other options are there as a simple
user front end to enter the data?

Thanks for any advice.

No. It's a classic design error that defeats most of the reasons why we
use a DBMS at all.

Also, this is a Microsoft SQL Server group. You'll most probably get
more help in an Oracle-specific group.

Whenever possible please post enough code to reproduce your problem.
Including CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements usually helps.
State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content
of any error messages.

front end for cubes

currently i use MSInsight as my cubes front end. its an asp page that users can build reports from cubes. its pretty old, and since ive started upgrading to AS2005, it doesnt work properly, leading me to think that it is not compatiable with AS2005 cubes. so im wondering, whats a good front end that can be used by many users? this rules excel out, as i need a front end that can be used my many users.

I can't speak to whether it's good, as I haven't used it, but here's one:

their WinForms OLAP viewer control looked decent when I evaluated it a couple months ago.

There's a lot out there to choose from; see

http://www.mosha.com/msolap/util.htm

as a good starting point. What kind of front end are you after?

You should also check out what's coming in the medium term with PerformancePoint, which is based in part on the technology that Microsoft acquired from Proclarity last year. See

Front End Access and Back End as SQL Server

Dear Friends,

We have MS Access database with Forms and Reports, which was started 10 years ago by users and now the data is growing very rapidly.

Did anyone tried by having MS Access as front end and SQL Server 2000/2005 as backend with minimum modifications to the forms and reports in MS Access?

Please let me know, your ideas and if there are any links in the web or in Microsoft please provide here.

Friday Fun - RunningTotalsAnyone?

If I put this in crystal reports I can manipulate it ok, but actually translating it to a command isn't so easy for me. I'm terrible at cursors and need some help here, pretty pretty please.

I have a table...

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[StagePayment] (
[PaymentID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL ,
[JobID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL ,
[Paid] [bit] NOT NULL ,
[Sequence] [smallint] NOT NULL ,
[Amount] [decimal](10, 2) NOT NULL ,
[Activity] [varchar] (30) NULL ,
[ActivityID] [uniqueidentifier] NULL ,
[DueDate] [datetime] NULL ,
[InvoiceNumber] [varchar] (50) NULL ,
[DueNext] [bit] NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO

Simple example of the data I need to work with...

PayID JobID Paid Sequence Amount DueNext

6094 12 1 1 0.00 0
6B1E 18 1 1 0.00 0
297C 25 1 1 0.00 0
E175 30 1 1 4390.00 0
8CF9 30 1 2 4390.00 0
9168 39 1 1 4400.00 0
59F4 39 1 2 6632.00 0
BCAF 54 1 1 417.50 0
5922 54 0 2 417.50 0
8DA0 68 1 1 2988.00 0
76C5 68 1 2 9958.00 0
0C13 68 1 3 7566.00 0
F3F4 68 1 4 2390.00 0

What I need to accomplish is flagging the DueNext field if the amount due has not been paid. I cannot rely on the Paid field as it's currently user controlled. I need to compare what's due with the total already paid (stored in another table).

So for instance,
Job #68 - the total amount due would be $22902.00

If the customer has paid $15000.00 then Sequence 3, PayID 0C13, should be flagged as DueNext.

Anyone have a very simple example of a running total cursor that I can reference or a better idea of how to work with this? I appreciate any and all suggestions!
Thanks!
abbra_dooYou can do running totals in SQLSVR without cursors, but is it better to handle them in your reporting tool (Crystal Reports, in your case).
Include the total already paid from the other table as a column in your result set. Have Crystal keep the running total and flag records that exceed the total paid.|||You could create function and bind it to the DueNext field. Inside the function you can compare the totals and have the function return either a 1 or a 0 (zero)

Here's an example from BOL

CREATE FUNCTION CubicVolume
-- Input dimensions in centimeters
(@.CubeLength decimal(4,1), @.CubeWidth decimal(4,1),
@.CubeHeight decimal(4,1) )
RETURNS decimal(12,3) -- Cubic Centimeters.
AS
BEGIN
RETURN ( @.CubeLength * @.CubeWidth * @.CubeHeight )
END

This function can then be used anywhere an integer expression is allowed, such as in a computed column for a table:

CREATE TABLE Bricks
(
BrickPartNmbr int PRIMARY KEY,
BrickColor nchar(20),
BrickHeight decimal(4,1),
BrickLength decimal(4,1),
BrickWidth decimal(4,1),
BrickVolume AS
(
dbo.CubicVolume(BrickHeight,
BrickLength, BrickWidth)
)
)

Obviously your logic will differ from this function but essentially it should work the same way you'll just have to have some If...then logic to determine what you want to return.

Best regards|||Thanks blindman but our developers are revamping the application for our users and the DueNext field is new and needs to be populated within the database. Otherwise I'd be real happy as the report was alreay in place and working. Eventually this change is supposed to make life on the payment side of the fence much more intuitive and reports should become easier overall - fingers crossed!
abbra_doo|||Thanks mkal -

I'll read up more on this and see if it'll help.

abbra_doo|||Would it be easier to add a temporary field called RunningTotal to the StagePayment table and insert the tabulated running total for that job then I would only have to compare and flag DueNext as necessary? Sort of like this...

PayID JobID Paid Sequence Amount RunningTotal DueNext

6094 12 1 1 0.00 0.00 0
6B1E 18 1 1 0.00 0.00 0
297C 25 1 1 0.00 0.00 0
E175 30 1 1 4390.00 4390.00 0
8CF9 30 1 2 4390.00 8780.00 0
9168 39 1 1 4400.00 4400.00 0
59F4 39 1 2 6632.00 11032.00 0
BCAF 54 1 1 417.50 417.50 0
5922 54 0 2 417.50 835.00 0
8DA0 68 1 1 2988.00 2988.00 0
76C5 68 1 2 9958.00 12946.00 0
0C13 68 1 3 7566.00 20512.00 0
F3F4 68 1 4 2390.00 22902.00 0

I'm still sort of stuck on getting the runnig total to tally right though so if anyone has thoughts I would love to hear them!
abbra_doo|||I wouldn't use a function for this.

In your case, you need to calculate a running total, which requires a scan of the table. A user-defined function would execute once for every record in your resultset (or more), so 1000 records means 1000 function calls and 1000 scans.

Here is one method of doing this without a cursor:
select StagePayment.JobID,
StagePayment.Sequence,
StagePayment.Amount,
sum(RunningSums.Amount) as RunningSum
from StagePayment
inner join StagePaymen RunningSums
on StagePayment.JobID = RunningSums.JobID
and StagePayment.Sequence >= RunningSums.Sequence
group by StagePayment.JobID,
StagePayment.Sequence,
StagePayment.Amount|||blindman, excellent as usual

next he's gonna ask you for the update statement...

;)|||Sorry, I've been out and I'm just getting back to this.

Thanks a bunch blindman! I was using a <= in my query and getting exactly the same as the Amount and once switched to >= I got the running total! So thanks, thanks, thanks! I was the blind-one in that query! Hahaha!

I ended up creating a temp table and I put all the data from the StagePayment table, plus a running total column, plus the total amount paid column for each job. Then I just updated the temp table and selected the minimum sequence for a job where the amount due (running total field) was less than the amount paid. Spot checked some of the jobs and updated the actual StagePayment table and !!Voila!!, no cursor needed - I really dislike them! Everything looks like it's correct so I think I'm a happy camper!

Thanks again!
Hope you all have a terrific 2007 (Lunar Year of the Fire Pig)!

Fresh Starter in ReportViewer Needs Some Guidance

Hi,

I just started to learn ReportViewer and Reporting Services recently. A few days ago, I created a report project with some reports in it. A few moments ago, I tried to create a page with a ReportViewer in it by using Visual Studio. In smart tag of this ReportViewer, I set the Report Server Url and the Report Path so the ReportViewer refers the reports that I made previously. When I run my application, I receive "The permissions granted to user 'IT-HARIS\IUSR_IT-HARIS' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)" message. What should I do next? How to set the permission of a user so he / she is authorized to do an action?

Thanks in advance

Try this cool linkhttp://www.gotreportviewer.com/

|||

Hi,

From your description, it seems that the "IT-HARIS\IUSER_IT-HARIS" is the anonymous user in IIS you set, right?

If so, I think that you should disable the anonymous visiting in your IIS first. And then try to open the SQL reporting service configuration, try to make sure that the user registered in web service identity has been in theSQLServer2005ReportingServiceWebServiceUsers$UserName$XXX andSQLServer2005ReportServerUser$UserName$XXX group, if not, add the user into these two groups.

Thanks.

I don't know of anyone who has implemented this for RS 2000 - but in that
case, you would need to implement a full custom rendering extension yourself
for RS 2000 (which is a major effort and lots of work).

freeze rows

Hi,

would it be possible to freeze the header rows of a table when viewing the reports? when viewing reports, i can't see the header rows when scroll down to the bottom of the page.

thanks

Yes, this is supported in RS 2005. E.g. on the table properties dialog in report designer, select "header should remain visible while scrolling".

Freeze panes when report is exported to Excel

I am using RS 2005 and emailing reports in Excel to my end users. Is it possible to set the report in VS.Net to freeze the panes so that the user will always see the column A when they scroll to the right once they view the report in Excel?

I have the feeling the answer is no, but I thought I'd check.

Hi, there is a property named FixedHeader. I didn′t try that this deep yet (only for table header) , but it would be worth a try. I guess you will your own rendering extension as the rendering for Excel didn′t brought back the right results with fixed headers for me (worked well in HTML, but not in Excel)

HTH, jens Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de|||

I'm having the exact same issue. Has anyone been able to accomplish this successfully?

Jens Suessmeyer: I tried the property option but that didn’t work for me. The closest to what I’m trying to accomplish (that I’ve gotten); it’s using a report header which freezes the first row (or whatever u have in the header) yet by design it doesn’t accomplish what I (and rs12345) am trying to do.

The only option that I see out there is purchasing OfficeWriter by SoftArtisans or just try to figure out how they do it and write the code (It seems they use scripts... not sure yet).

Any ideas anybody? (or links :) )

|||Sorry, we don't support programmatic setting of Freeze Panes. The only

thing Excel export uses Freeze Panes for is for the PageHeader when

SimpleHeaders=false (the default).

Excel export ignores the FixedHeaders property.

OfficeWriter would support your use case, because you author the report in Excel and can set the freeze panes when designing the report. You could also use the ExcelApplication class from OfficeWriter to modify the output file.

OfficeWriter doesn't use VBA scripting, if that's what you mean; it reads, modifies, and writes the binary BIFF8 Excel format.

Freeze Panes

I have created some reports in RS that contain alot of information. The problem I have is that at the top of the list it is fine, but when you start to Drill Down and then scroll down the list, the column titles disappear.

So the question is, how can I freeze the horizontal and vertical panes, or should I say, can I freeze those panes?

Regards

You can accomplish this within a Table. Include all the info that you want to stay on the screen in the Table Header and set the FixedHeader property to False. Then when you scroll down, the table header remains at the top.

You will probalby want to change the background color from transparent to either white or some other collor, because otherwise you will see both the header and the data underneath.

Note: the FixedHeader feature is only available in RS 2005. You can use it in tables and in matrix.

Freeze pane in RS 2000 SP2 / RS2005 web reports

Hi,
a lot of my users were asking me to have the possibilty of a freeze
pane (similar to excel) in the RS web reports because often the reports
are to long to see the column haeders. Especially when you have
drilldowns it would help.
Has somebody tried to implement such feature by DLL to RS 2000. Is this
feature planned for RS 2005 '
thanks
BBThe only way (that I know of) to accomplish what you're asking for is to have
a custom application that modifies the output file after it has been saved
and then forwards it to the person who initially requested it. We have one
non-RS custom application that does this (internal use only) and are working
on a way to do this with RS rendered reports.
Basically what your application has to do:
1- Client requests report
2- Application renders report in excel and saves to disk.
3- Appliation modifies the excel file properties (page margins, fit to
page, freeze panes, etc.)
4- Appliation passes modified file to the Client
It's a lot of work.

framework 1.0 and 1.1

If my enviroment is based on .net framework 1.0, can i install vs 2003 with
framework 1.1, can i development reports within this mixed installation?Hi
.NET 1.1 is compatible with 1.0. Your 1.0 applications will run on the 1.1
framework if it is installed. No requirement for you to do anything.
There is one exception, if you specifically state the system DLL versions in
your code.
BUT, 1.1 can not run on the 1.0 framework. Once you go 1.1, the lowest
common denominator on your clients and servers must be 1.1

Fragmented array

Does anyone have any advice about fragmentation/defragmentation of RAID arra
ys. Basically W2K Defrag reports 80% fragmentation on a partition and our Ne
t Support are unsure whether to defrag it because it is a h/w RAID solution.

What is fragmented? Is it your mdf and ldf files, non-database files or ever
ything?
If it is your database files, I would guess you have autogrow on and are gro
wing a very small percentage at a time. It is much better to grow your datab
ase in fewer large files, than lots of little files. Depending on disk space
, when your database needs
to be expanded grow it as much as you can, try for at least 6 months growth
, more if possible.
If that is the case your best bet is to create a new database with large con
tiguous data files. You would then need to copy all your database to it, usi
ng DTS, BCP or similar. You can not use backup and restore as this would re-
create the database in the
same style you have. You could try to create new filegroups and move your da
ta into them and empty the old filegroups and delete them, this can be a bit
messy.
Good Luck

John|||Hi,
It is always good to defragment the array(s) every
fortnight. In your case It is very much needed as the
report shows 80% fragmentation. Use a utility like
DiskKeeper. There is a DiskKeeperLite version available
which u can try out. Defragmenting the arrays wont affect
SQL Server performance unless u r defragmenting the disks
in peak hours.
Also Look at the below article if you are concerned about
defragmenting SQL Server Database. The title is a bit
confusing as the user might think that one can defragment
the SQL Database directly using DiskKeeper, but, the
author explains initially that you need to perform certain
things to defragment the database "Internally", then about
DiskKeeper.

This kind of raised alarm bells for me. It sounds like a recommendation
based on folklore rather than evidence.

It all depends on what you mean by 'needed'. I didn't see any evidence that
the original poster actually had a performance problem, still less that it
was caused by large times waiting on io and none at all that the io wait was
caused by file fragmentation.

I'd at least start with the inbuilt tool which is free and does an ok job.

It isn't a bad article as it does explain the problem with fragmentation in
general. I'd like it to go further and suggest how you might decide on when
to defragment.
I'd suggest the following to the original poster.
1. Don't use autoextend for data and log files, or if you do make sure the
increments are large. Try and size the datafiles up front and then monitor
free space and extend or add datafiles manually.
2. don't worry about defragmentation unless *all* of the following are true
- you have a defined response time problem (or a trend that predicts
that you will have one soon)
- you can identify waiting for io as the cause of the problem
- you cannot reduce the io requirements of the task.
- you can identify that you are waiting because of the delay in
skipping around the disk.
- you have at least a good indication that the impact of the
defragmentation process is not worse than the current system performance
levels.
all of the above conditions are satisified very rarely indeed and so i'd
suggest defragmentation of sqlservers filesystems should be equally rare.
3. don't buy a tool - use the inbuilt one.
